The Double Ninth Festival is a traditional folk festival in China. The Double Ninth Festival is a traditional folk festival in China. In ancient times, people would climb high places to pray for blessings and honor gods and ancestors during the Double Ninth Festival. This custom has been passed down through the ages and has since been enriched with new meanings, such as respecting and showing gratitude toward the elderly.
Located in Renhuai County, Guizhou Province, China, Maotai Town is cradled by the winding Chishui River, which flows between two majestic mountains, creating a grand and breathtaking natural landscape. The Chishui River nourishes more than 3,000 distilleries along its banks, and the renowned Maotai liquor produced here has earned a global reputation for its exquisite aroma.
As one of the essential ingredients for brewing sauce wine, the water from the Chishui River is used to cleanse the glutinous sorghum before the start of the "Xia Sha" process each year on the Double Ninth Festival. The sorghum is mixed with wheat bran and then subjected to high-temperature steaming. Once the steam has cooled, the liquor is extracted, ensuring that the resulting sauce wine achieves a smooth, mellow, and sweet flavor.
For thousands of years, the Chishui River has nourished every distillery in Maotai Town, enabling local residents to craft the distinctive sauce-aroma liquor. Out of gratitude toward the Chishui River, older generations of Maotai artisans gather on the banks of the river after the "xia sha" ceremony during the Double Ninth Festival—the final time they draw liquor from the sauce-aroma wine production cycle—holding a solemn and grand water-offering ritual to express their profound respect for the Chishui River.

Moutai Town Water Sacrifice Ceremony
To this day, local residents still place great importance on the annual Water Sacrifice Ceremony, passing down the spirit of gratitude held by earlier generations of Maotai artisans. Moreover, the time-honored techniques for making sauce-aroma liquor at the ancient Maotai Distillery have been continuously preserved and carried forward. Located within the prime 7.5-square-kilometer area of Maotai Town, Huacheng Liquor Group was personally founded and directly passed down by Mr. Luo Qingzhong—the “Master of a Generation, Father of Sauce-Aroma Liquor.” As a “master craftsman and the father of sauce-aroma liquor,” Mr. Luo not only conducted profound research into the techniques of sauce-aroma brewing but also harbored deep affection for the craft itself. To enable more people to savor the exquisite sauce-aroma wines of Maotai Town, Mr. Luo passed on his invaluable sauce-aroma brewing expertise to his descendants. Today, Lou Fanglin, Executive Chairman of Huacheng Liquor Group and the fourth-generation direct heir of Mr. Luo, strictly adheres to the “Three-Aroma Standardization Method” developed by Mr. Luo, meticulously crafting traditional Maotai-style sauce-aroma liquor. As a result, the sauce-aroma liquors produced annually by Huacheng Liquor Group boast distinctive characteristics: a prominent sauce aroma, an elegant and delicate profile, a sweet and lingering finish, and a lasting fragrance even after the glass has been emptied.

Mr. Luo Qingzhong, the Sauce Father
To honor Mr. Luo Qingzhong, the “Sauce Father,” Lou Fanglin, General Manager of Huacheng Liquor Group, has specially launched the “Huacheng Sauce Father” series of wines. This series is meticulously crafted in strict adherence to the traditional Maotai-style 12987 brewing process and features the Yin-Yang blending technique personally developed by Sauce Father Luo Qingzhong. As a result, the “Sauce Father” wines boast distinctive characteristics—rich sauce aroma, mellow sweetness, and a subtle cellar-floor fragrance—perfectly satisfying the palates of customers who appreciate authentic Maotai-style sauce wines!
